State of x402 · report no. 1 · July 2026
Less than half of the x402 economy is real.
x402 is the HTTP-native rail AI agents use to pay for things in USDC. Its headline numbers are quoted constantly and audited never. This is the first independent attempt to separate the real economy from the noise — wash trading, dust, and facilitator settlement flows that inflate every raw total. Everything below is reproducible from our public data.
The honesty gap
In the 30 days to 2026-07-02, x402 processed $955k in raw, unfiltered on-chain volume. After excluding wash trading, sub-cent dust loops, and the settlement wallets facilitators route aggregated flows through, $428k — about 45% — is organic revenue earned by real sellers. Every raw explorer publishes the larger number; we publish both and show our work.
Who actually earns
Strip the noise and the x402 economy is small and top-heavy: 173 wallets cleared our organic bar (≥ $100 revenue, ≥ 3 distinct buyers, average payment ≥ $0.001) out of 31,652 that received anything at all. The top 10 wallets hold 65% of all volume, and the median wallet earned $0.10 across the whole month — the long tail is spam and micro-dust, not commerce. The real question for x402 isn’t how big the number is; it’s how many businesses it can support. Today that answer is in the low hundreds — and worth watching monthly.
The facilitator landscape
Coinbase clears the plurality of x402 payments, but the second-largest “seller,” Meridian, is a facilitator settlement wallet — its throughput is other people’s revenue, which is exactly why our organic filter excludes it. This is the browser-wars chart of machine commerce, and it will be the most-watched number as more facilitators launch. Live facilitator breakdowns →
Context: the wash era
x402’s reported history is dominated by an artificial-volume wave in late 2025 that peaked at $3.0M in a single day (2025-11-03) — almost none of it commerce. Independent analyses reached the same conclusion about that period; Artemis flagged roughly 86% of Solana’s all-time x402 activity as gamed, and the wallets behind that wave have been quiet since. It is the reason a filtered number exists at all, and the reason “x402 did $X” headlines that cite raw totals are almost always wrong by 2×.
Methodology. Organic = wallets with ≥ $100 revenue in the window, ≥ 3 distinct buyers, average payment ≥ $0.001, excluding identified facilitator settlement wallets (Meridian, RelAI, FluxA). Sources: on-chain USDC transfers aggregated across 10+ facilitators, Coinbase CDP and facilitator discovery registries. Raw figures are published unfiltered alongside. Full methodology →
